University of Toronto, Scarborough – Science & Chemistry Building

Project Description

Design and construction of a new state of the art academic laboratory facility. The facility incorporates innovative design solutions for sustainable and highly flexible research and teaching space, connecting laboratories and academic offices around a sky-lit forum and crossroads. The facility is designed to LEED Gold standard and sustainable features include geothermal boreholes, and an earth tube system to supply 100% fresh air to the administrative wing.
VR Mechanical’s role on this project as part of the design-build team was to provide an experienced full service mechanical solution to the project. This included; design/engineering assistance and integration, 3 dimensional CAD layout and multi-discipline interference detection, 3D modeling of mechanical plants, mechanical contract management, plumbing systems, HVAC systems, medical vacuum systems, lab air systems, fume exhaust systems, mechanical insulation, building automation systems and mechanical systems commissioning. Construction of the new 110,000 square foot facility kicked off in November 2013 and substantial completion achieved in August of 2015.
